Helicopter operations in a degraded visual environment (DVE) have been associated with an increased risk of spatial disorientation in military pilots. 11 When outside visual references are lost due to atmospheric conditions, such as fog, the pilot must rely on cockpit instruments to maintain spatial orientation.
